Depending on when you’re reading this, you have about two and a half months before the official start of summer; June 20th. You’ve probably already noticed the array of swimsuits, beach hats and flip flops at the stores. About 3 weeks ago I knew I’d be taking a quickie beach vacation this past weekend and all I was looking at were the cover-ups and one-piece swimsuits. Time passed and because I just wasn’t happy with the way I looked, I didn’t buy a thing. I’ve been doing a program called 80 Day Challenge by Beachbody and I was by Day 12 on Friday when we left on our little trip. I packed up two one piece suits I already owned and about 3 two piece suits and I figured I’d see what mood I was in when it was time to put one on. Saturday morning I laid them all out on the bed and my husband chose the sexiest two piece out of them all. I put it on and walked over to the full length mirror in the living room. Expecting disappointment, I was very happy with how the swimsuit looked. Three weeks of putting in one hour workouts and eating right had me looking pretty good in my bikini! I felt more motivated that ever to keep my workouts going!
So the 80 Day Obsession is proving to be incredibly effective and I have some time to go before completing the program but I know that I will have the amazing results that I expect! Four years ago I did the 21 Day Fix and my body completely transformed. See any workout that you do with fidelity will work. The first step to getting yourself ready for any kind of program or exercise regimen is to get your mindset right. Whether you haven’t exercised in years or you’re a habitual exercise started and quitter, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Exercising is hard work. If it wasn’t we’d all have the perfect slim and buff bodies and our complaint would be how we just can’t get rid of these muscles instead. You also have to stop making excuses. I have NO TIME is the most common one. I was waking up at 5:00 am to serenade you guys here with my content. I’d work for two hours then go get ready for my real job. Since starting 80 Day Obsession, I’ve given up an hour to get my workouts done in the AM and I put in that hour I lost at night. You have the time! You just have to find it and give it to yourself, your body and your mind!
The key to sticking with exercise is getting comfortable with a little discomfort. Discomfort with waking up when you could be sleeping, discomfort with giving up sofa time to getting in a workout, discomfort with meal prepping rather eating a drive-through lunch and dinner. You do it by taking little changing steps at a time. At first you’ll be stepping out of your comfort zone but once exercising and eating healthy become a routine you become so energized and so happy with your progression, that you can’t wait to do it. Fitness and staying in shape will become such a necessary part of your life. So much so that when you miss an exercise or “cheat” on a meal you’ll begin to feel more uncomfortable than the discomfort you felt when you started exercising.
Get Outside Every Morning
Want to burn the most fat and get in some vitamin D? Take your workouts outside. Do your at home workout video in your backyard or balcony, go for a run or take some weights outside and do your training a La Sunshine. Studies show that sun exposure between 8 a.m. and noon is linked to high fat burning regardless of the exercise or age.
Twist it Up
Stretching is just as important as exercising. Stretching elongates your muscles and allows for more muscle growth and protects you from workout injuries. Avoid back strains by rotating the spine with a back twist stretch. Lie on your back and pull your knees into your chest. Autumn Calabrese in 80 Day Obsession and 21 Day Fix highly encourages completing your stretches after each workout. They’re just as important as the workout that was just completed. If you don’t stretch, your muscles tense up making the next workout that more painful and more difficult to complete. Another good stretch: lieing on the ground twist your legs to one side while twisting your upper body to the opposite side. Stretch your arms out completely as to make a T with your upper body.
Ixnay The Sports Drink
Many sports drink don’t do as promised. They are high in sugar and often have more calories than what’s actually being burned off. Beachbody has created an Energize Powder to mix with water pre-workout. Only 15 calories and 2 grams of sugar, you are sure to burn that off. It tastes like lemonade and gives you a great pre-workout boost!
The Quickie Firmer Thighs
Dedicate 30 seconds to sumo squats and your inner glutes and thighs will be transformed! Make sure you take a wide stance with your feet turned out, keep all of your weight on your heels and slowly bend your knees and sit your booty back down. On the way back up, press without locking your knees. Do 10 of these with a 10 second hold on the last one. Hello tones glutes and thighs!
Count It Down
Before starting the 80 Day Obsession, I was afraid. Literally afraid of this program. I had completed 21 Day Fix and I’ve done spinning classes and weight training but I don’t know why I was so afraid of 80 Day Obsession. Well, it’s not that hard at all. Yes, it has moves that are challenging and force you to find that inner strength to complete the round, but it’s all very doable. What helps the rounds go by a easier is the fact that Autumn counts down the reps. So, with each one complete, you realize you’re that much closer to finishing. This is a great trick when exercising. If you’re looking at the time rather than counting one by one, set a timer. I use the T-Zero Countdown Timer app on my Iphone.
Don’t Let Travel Stop You
When on a business trip or vacation, you may not want to use the hotels gym. That’s okay. But don’t let that stop you’re routine. With Beachbody on Demand you have an array of workout video’s that you can do. Some in as little as 22 minutes. 22 Minutes Hard Corps or T25 in 25 minutes.
Don’t let all that effort go to waste after your workout. Post workout refueling supplies your body with everything that it will need to repair, rebuild and recover. “But I just did a little video” you say. No matter the type of exercise, your muscles are craving to be soothed after what you just put them through. You have to give them recovery goodness. A protein and a carb would be ideal but maybe you don’t have the time for that or you’re like my hubby and just can’t eat a meal like that after a workout. The easy solution is to go liquid. My post workout shake is Shakeology. At home I blend my powder with cinnamon, a banana, almond milk and almond butter but when I’m on the run, it’s just has good with water and ice. My favorite flavors are Vegan Chocolate and Cafe Latte.
Drink More Water
For weight loss, yes! It doesn’t get any easier than this. You should be drinking half your weight in ounces. So, take me for example. I weigh 145 pounds. I should be drinking 73 oz of water. I’m always on the lookout for thermos bottles. The bigger the better. I have one now that holds 32 oz of water. My plan is to drink two full bottles (64 oz). That leaves me with 9 oz to drink. So basically a glass and a half with dinner and I’ve fulfilled my water intake requirement for the day. By drinking my required amount of water, my metabolic rate increases by 30 percent helping me burn fat at a faster rate. It also helps keep me hydrated and not crave food. Did you know that being dehydrated can actually fool your body into thinking its hungry. Drinking water also hydrates the skin and keeps my skin glowing.
The body needs rest just as much as it needs nutritious meals, exercise and water. Make sure you get 8 hours of sleep every night. Keep electronics out of the bedroom as much as possible. Invest in an air diffuser and use essential oils like lavender to help promote a good nights rest.
